My PI, Hany Farid, and I were delighted to join the discussion about AI voice cloning technologies at The White House in January. Between the fake robocalls in New Hampshire, large scale consumer fraud and an upcoming election, it’s fair to say that we’re at a pivotal time in society with AI technologies. While automated Machine Learning detection strategies offer high accuracies in the lab, they are 'brittle' in reality (a great phrase I picked up from Patrick Traynor). Yet, audio deepfakes in particular are advancing so quickly that traditional cues such as breaths and pauses are no longer sufficient to spot them.
So, what do we do? Well, from where I’m sitting, there is no single ‘silver bullet’ solution (yet...). In the upcoming year, collaboration, education, policymaking and technology will all be of critical importance in the fight against misinformation.
Oh, and I was excited to grab some of the official White House M&Ms. Thank you for having us!
